Diagnosed with Scurvy in Early 2022: Robbie Williams Reveals Personal Health Battle
Singer Robbie Williams, 51, has gone public with his battle against scurvy, a rare vitamin deficiency. He opened up about his health struggles in an interview with the Mirror.
Williams confessed that his year started with poor mental health, which he hasn't experienced for a long time. He felt sad, anxious, and depressed, a stark contrast from his usual self. The "Take That" sensation had previously battled depression in his 20s but believed he was past that phase. However, the return of these feelings left him perplexed.
As he noticed a disconnect between his diet and his overall well-being, Williams suspected his diet could be contributing to his mental health issues. He shared that he had stopped eating properly and wasn't getting the necessary nutrients. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with scurvy, a condition often associated with 17th-century pirates due to its rarity in modern times.
Scurvy is a serious vitamin C deficiency, typically caused by a lack of the nutrient in one's diet. Common symptoms include bleeding gums, joint pain, skin changes, fatigue, hair and skin problems, poor wound healing, and anemia. It's more prevalent in countries with malnourished populations but is rare in the US due to its nutrient-rich diet.
Upon addressing dietary changes, Williams' health improved, and he was able to manage his mental health struggles. "The most important thing is for yourself to be okay," he said.
The singer is gearing up for a tour in the UK, Ireland, and Europe starting in May, and his biographical musical drama "A Better Man," released last year, has been nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects.
For those who suspect they may have scurvy, it is important to consult a healthcare provider and focus on improving their diet to include vitamin C-rich foods. Late detection and treatment of scurvy can lead to severe complications. Stay healthy, folks!
