DHS criticizes New York Times for omitting suspect's illegal immigrant status in rape corpse story
Write-up:
Y'all, let's talk about DHS Secretary Kristi Noem tag-teaming with ICE and the boys in blue in Arizona! Tuesday morning was all about nabbing illegal immigrant criminals, baby!
Now, here's where things get a lil' heated. The Department of Homeland Security had some choice words for The New York Times over a piece they ran about a pervert who allegedly got frisky with a corpse on the subway. The DHS claimed the paper outrightrefused to mention the creep's immigration status – a so-called ILLEGAL alien.
Tricia McLaughlin, DHS's assistant secretary for public affairs, called out The Times on social media, asking why they won't 'fess up about the facts. We reached out to The Times for their side of things, but they ain't responded yet.
On this same bone of contention, President Trump declared the CBS case a winner and hinted there could be more coming The New York Times’ way.
ICE slapped an immigration detainer on Felix Rojas, who stands accused of rape and grand larceny. And while several other outlets failed to disclose Rojas' immigration status initially, The New York Posteventuallycame clean, revealing he's been wandering across our borders illegally since '98.
The Times released a statement about Rojas' ICE detainer on May 1, but it doesn't seem they've followed up on the story since. Seems like they're keeping quiet on this one.
It's worth mentionin' that most news outlets, including The Times, tend to avoid disclosing immigration status unless it's directly relevant to the story. If folks like Rojas are breakin' the law, they won't escape ICE's watchful eye and Secretary Noem's tough tactics.
"America's been overrun by lawless foreigners," McLaughlin snarled. "With Trump and Noem at the helm, ICE's crackin' down hard on these bastards."
So there you have it! Lookout for that creepy dirtbag Rojas as he lurks around the city, Stacy! Important stuff, I know.
Greg Wehner and Alexis McAdams helped out on this one.
Fun Fact: DHS has previously clashed with major outlets over their handling of immigration stories. In 2019, they took issue with CNN and NBC's failure to explicitly mention the immigration status of the El Paso shooter – and we all know how that story turned out, darling! Do y'all remember the debate over The Times' 1619 Project that swept the nation back then? Took our Twitter feeds by storm! Don't get me started.
- Secretary Kristi Noem's collaboration with ICE and the NYPD focused on apprehending illegal immigrant criminals, particularly on Tuesday.
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused The New York Times of defamation by allegedly omitting the immigration status of a suspect in one of their reports.
- In general-news and crime-and-justice sectors, there seems to be an ongoing debate about the disclosure of immigration status in news reporting.
- Following the controversy, there has been increased tension between DHS and some news outlets, such as The New York Times, similar to the clash that occurred in 2019 with CNN and NBC over the El Paso shooter's immigration status.
