DHB squad disregards pressure and captivates the coach's attention
Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy link The German U21 handball gang steals the torch from the golden generation: At the World Championships, the DHB squad wraps up their main round game, leaving the national coach in awe. They're all set to face the Swedes in their next "do-or-die" challenge.
Following their nail-biting 35:35 draw against Spain, the defending champions Germany made it to the quarter-finals of the U21 World Championships in handball as group winners. Facing off against previously undefeated Egypt in Kielce, Poland, the team of coach Martin Heuberger triumphed 29:25 (13:9). In an upcoming thriller, the DHB juniors will lock horns with Sweden on Thursday (9:00 PM/Dyn).
With the pressure on, the German squad needed nothing less than a victory against Egypt to stay alive in the competition. After their close call against Spain, the team proved their mettle in an impressive display of focus and skill. Star scorer David Móré (Rhein-Neckar Löwen) contributed eight goals to the win.
"I'm exceptionally proud of this team that has fought hard for success. We're still unbeaten, which makes me particularly thrilled," commented national coach Heuberger. "We faced high expectations and pressure, but the guys demonstrated impressive focus and Nailed the win early on." In March, the DHB team had suffered defeats against the African champions Egypt. This time, however, they flipped the script.
Stunning Half-Time Show
The DHB team impressed with a powerful run, extending their lead from 4:3 to 12:4 in just 13 minutes. Such a dominant display on defense caught the eye of coach Heuberger: "The first 24 minutes were simply outstanding. The guys put up one of the best defensive halves I've ever witnessed." The extraordinary performance set the stage for victory, making the final score irrelevant despite Egypt's late comeback.
Walking in the Footsteps of Legends
The triumph of the DHB team mirrors the achievements of the golden DHB generation of 2023 which claimed the title in a dominant fashion, sending shivers of excitement throughout the spectators. Coach Alfred Gislason has since promoted no fewer than eight World Champions of 2023 to the men's A-team. Young stars Nils Lichtlein, David Späth, Renars Uscins, and Justus Fischer were mainstays on the men's national squad in recent years. Späth, Uscins, and Fischer were also part of the silver-winning German Olympic team at the 2024 games, infamously taking down host France and Spain along the way.
