Dhaka’s winter vegetable prices stay stubbornly high despite steady supply
Winter vegetables continued to sell at high prices in Dhaka’s markets on Friday. Despite a good supply, traders reported little change in costs, blaming unusually high source prices for the steady rates. Some items, like potatoes and onions, showed minor shifts, while others remained fixed at last week’s levels.
Potatoes saw mixed pricing across the city. The older stock sold for Tk 25-30 per kilogram, slightly up from two weeks ago but far below last year’s Tk 65-75 range. Meanwhile, newly harvested potatoes fetched Tk 150-170 per kilogram.
Onions dropped marginally, now selling at Tk 100-110 per kilogram. Green chillies stayed unchanged at Tk 100-120 per kilogram, but red chillies varied between Tk 350-500 per kilogram, depending on the type.
Other vegetables held steady or dipped slightly. Cauliflower sold at Tk 50 per piece, cabbage at Tk 40, and beans at Tk 80-120 per kilogram. Radishes were priced at Tk 30-40 per kilogram. Broiler chicken remained at Tk 160-170 per kilogram, while eggs stayed at Tk 120 per dozen.
Prices for spiny gourds, pointed gourds, okra, yardlong beans, bitter gourd, aubergines, cucumbers, and tomatoes mostly mirrored last week’s rates. Traders linked the high costs to elevated source prices, affecting both wholesale and retail markets.
The overall trend in Dhaka’s vegetable markets showed little relief for buyers. While some items, like onions, saw minor price drops, most remained expensive due to persistent supply-chain costs. Broiler chicken and eggs, however, stayed stable, offering some consistency for shoppers.
