Modernizing Digital Competencies In Bavarian Vocational Schools is Imperative
In a survey conducted by DGB Bayern from September 2022 to spring 2023 among 1,400 trainees, over seven in ten are content with their apprenticeships. Yet, nearly half recognize the necessity for sharpening their digital expertise. Vocational schools in Bavaria need to adapt to meet the demands of the evolving digital labor market.
Bavarian apprentices show a positive attitude towards workplace digitalization, with half reporting confidence in handling digital tasks. However, satisfaction with digital education at vocational schools is lower. Seventeen percent are displeased with their school preparation for digital technologies, while only 35% highly praise these courses. District Youth Secretary Anna Gmeiner highlights the disparity in digital education quality among schools in Bavaria and calls for the provision of necessary digital resources.
With 100,000 training positions available and around 59,000 applicants in Bavaria itself, filling certain apprenticeships remains a challenge. Bernhard Stiedl, the DGB state chairman, suggests that poor working conditions, excessive overtime, and a lack of appreciation might be contributing factors.
