Bringing Wages in Check: DGB's Demand for a Unified Wage Agreement Law in NRW

Demands Enforcement of Pay Equity Law for State and Local Governments in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) by DGB - DGB calls for adherence by the Regional and Local Governments to the Tariff Law in NRW

Get ready for a shake-up in the wage landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)! DGB's state chairwoman, Anja Weber, is pushing for a unified wage agreement law across both the state and municipalities. At a May Day rally in Siegburg, Weber turned up the heat, calling on the state government to take action.

"It's about time!" Weber declared, addressing NRW's Minister President, Hendrik Wüst, who happened to be in attendance. Weber's plea? Public contracts should go exclusively to companies that comply with wage agreements, and these agreements must be evident as a significant advantage for businesses.

"A Year Ago, You Promised", Weber reminded Wüst, reminding him of his pledge for a wage agreement law in NRW announced a year ago. "We've had enough patience - put simply," Weber emphasized, stressing the urgent need for better work prospects in these challenging times.

According to DGB's earlier figures, a mere 51% of NRW's workforce is currently under wage agreements. Some may see this as a sign that the tide is turning, but Weber's not settling for it. "We need a wage revolution, right now!" she demanded.

Wüst acknowledged the goal, but sounded a note of caution. "We aim to find a fair balance," he said, hinting at avoiding needless bureaucracy. "But we're committed to boosting wage agreement coverage," he assured.

Children, the future

As the topic of wages heated up, Wüst steered the conversation to another pressing concern - the education of our children. "Resourcefulness and know-how, not coal or stone, are our most vital assets today," said Wüst. He emphasized that investing in quality education for all children, irrespective of their background, religion, or economic status, is paramount. "All children are our future," he concluded,.

In total, DGB organized around 70 events in NRW for May Day, attracting around 89,000 attendees, as per DGB's own figures. Wüst and Weber addressed the crowd at the central event in Siegburg, while prominent politicians like NRW Economics Minister Mona Neubaur, Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze, and Gregor Gysi joined events in other cities.
