Sara Doorsoun, 33, Eintracht Frankfurt's defensive powerhouse, had to swallow a setback when her injury woes in the run-up to the Women's Euro in Switzerland (2nd to 27th July) resulted in her only being added to the extended squad by Bundestrainer Christian Wück, rather than the main squad. With this extended invitation in her pocket, Doorsoun shocked the footballing world by opting out of the national team.
Three days before the official EM squad announcement, Sara took to Instagram, expressing her decision as something that had always been a possibility, albeit not in the immediate future. Despite that, she admitted that the prospect of sitting on the bench during the tournament was not part of her initial plan.
Meanwhile, Wück expressed regret over Doorsoun's injury troubles during the critical build-up to the tournament, but acknowledged her significant contributions to the national team in the past. DFB sports director Nia Künzer shared similar sentiments, regretting the withdrawal but respecting Doorsoun's reasons.
Lena Oberdorf, whose first international cap was in 2016 and most recently played in a 6-0 victory against Austria, is a name consistently linked with Sara Doorsoun. In contrast to her fellow defender, Oberdorf will not be representing Germany in the Women's Euro, as she continues her journey with Eintracht in the Bundesliga.
DFB vice-president Sabine Mammitzsch applauded Sara Doorsoun for her trailblazing impact both on and off the pitch. An advocate for promoting young people with migration backgrounds, Doorsoun's efforts extend beyond her football career to socially crucial causes. Her parents, from Iraq and Turkey respectively, hail from Cologne.
Despite media speculation, Sara Doorsoun's name continues to appear on official squad lists for upcoming tournaments, including the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.[2] It is yet to be confirmed whether her absence from the national team is temporary or permanent.
