After an arduous contemplation, Lina Magull, the formidable midfielder, has decided to bid adieu to the German national football team. Her announcement came via a statement from the German Football Association (DFB).
With tearful eyes, Magull shared her sentiments, "I find it incredibly hard to utter these words - it's the conclusion of a chapter that has molded my life in myriad ways, replete with overwhelming highs, challenging times, but also unforgettable and enchanting moments." The 30-year-old currently graces the fields of Inter Milan, having joined them in 2024.
Magull debuted for the senior national team in October 2015 and, over the years, gave 77 appearances for Germany, accumulating 22 goals. Her swan song for the national team was against Australia last October, where she even temporarily donned the captain's armband after entering as a substitute. Magull will receive a heartwarming tribute during the Nations League encounter against Scotland in Wolfsburg on April 8.
"She was an integral part of the women's national team for numerous years and made a significant contribution to our recent triumphs with her expertise, tactical acumen, and creative proficiency," said head coach Christian Wüß.
Despite her tenure with the German team, Magull never secured a major title. She was speculated to be a potential substitute at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and in the 2022 Euros, she scored the equalizer against England before being replaced in extra time. Among her promising career highlights, she is best remembered for winning the U20 World Cup with the team in Canada in 2014.
As for her reasons behind leaving the national team or her future endeavors, sources remain relatively tight-lipped.
