Developer Interview Volume 8, Fire Emblem Engage - Continuation

In an exclusive interview with the developers behind Fire Emblem Engage for the Nintendo Switch, we delve into the intricate process of creating the game's 3D character models. The renowned illustrator chosen for the character design was Mika Pikazo-san, known for her colorful, vivid, and appealing design style.

Pikazo-san's first assignment was to design Alear and Céline, the game's main characters. However, the transition from her intricate 2D illustrations to 3D models proved to be a challenging endeavour for the developers. The delicate expressions in Pikazo-san's eyes, renowned for their complexity, required a significant amount of effort to fine-tune in the 3D models.

The developers, eager to push the boundaries, decided to use 3D models exclusively for Fire Emblem Engage, marking it as the second mainline Fire Emblem title on Nintendo Switch to do so. By displaying and moving the characters in 3D, they could add richer expressions for their eye movements and facial expressions during battles, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

Characters like Framme, a Monk class adept at hand-to-hand combat, and Yunaka, with her unique personality and way of talking, caught the developers' attention. Each character was designed with meticulous attention to their personality and appearance, with the developers refining the designs to ensure balance in colors and avoid any overlap.

Pikazo-san's designs also included unique elements for some characters, setting them apart from the rest of the cast. To aid the developers in maintaining the overall balance of the design when creating the 3D models, she shared a proportion document.

Despite the challenges, the developers prioritized the quality of each character, making the process long and arduous. However, the results speak for themselves, as the characters in Fire Emblem Engage are displayed in striking 3D models that are sure to captivate players.
