Detty December is one of the world's biggest parties. And that's a big problem for some
Lagos is gearing up for another explosive Detty December, one of the world’s biggest party seasons. The 2025 Palmwine Music Festival leads the line-up, featuring top acts like Davido, Asake, Rema, and Central Cee. Despite ongoing security concerns, the city remains determined to celebrate in style.
Detty December transforms Lagos into a global party capital every year. The festivities run from December 6 to 31, often stretching into January. Locals and visitors pack the city for concerts, beach parties, weddings, and pop-up markets.
This year’s highlights include the Palmwine Music Festival, Peak Detty Vibes, and The Bonfire Experience with Victony. Flavour, Olamide, Shoday, and DJ Tunez are among the artists performing at Coke Studio’s December events. The 2025 schedule also features Juma Jux Live in Lagos and the Foodie in Lagos Festival.
The season draws thousands of Nigerians from abroad, known as IJGBs (I Just Got Backs). Their spending boosts the economy, with airfares, event tickets, and goods surging in price. Last year, the Lagos State government earned over $71.6 million from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment alone.
A recent proposal to charge diaspora visitors a $500 tourism tax was quickly dismissed. Officials called the idea 'ill-advised and potentially exploitative'. Many Lagosians plan their entire year around Detty December, saving up to join the celebrations.
Detty December remains a key cultural and economic moment for Nigeria. The 2025 edition promises packed venues, high-energy performances, and a major financial boost for Lagos. With global attention and local enthusiasm, the festival season shows no signs of slowing down.
