The Detroit Red Wings are set to retire the number 91, previously worn by forward Sergei Fedorov, in a ceremony scheduled for January 12, 2026, at Little Caesars Arena. This upcoming retirement marks the ninth retired number in the team's history, honoring Fedorov for his exceptional skill, impact in three Stanley Cup championships, and his hallmark role as part of the legendary "Russian Five."

Fedorov, a Russian-born player, is among the leaders of the Detroit Red Wings in various statistical categories. In his NHL regular-season career, he played in 1248 games and scored 1179 points (483 goals + 696 assists). During his 13 seasons with the Red Wings from 1990 to 2003, he played 908 games and scored 954 points (400+554) with the team.

In 1994, Fedorov became the first Russian player to win the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.

The retirement of Fedorov's number follows the retirements of two other Russian players, Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Fetisov. Konstantinov's career was cut short due to severe injuries sustained in a car accident six days after winning the Stanley Cup in 1997. His number 16 was retired first, following the tragic event. Fetisov's number 2 was retired next, after his tenure with the team.

Interestingly, the numbers 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 19 are unavailable in the Detroit Red Wings. The number of Vladimir Konstantinov, though officially available, is not in use by the team.

The ceremony to retire Fedorov's number will take place before a regular-season NHL game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Fans and well-wishers are expected to gather at Little Caesars Arena to celebrate the career of one of the greatest players in Red Wings history.
