In the dangerous world of motorcycle racing, one category stands out with its nail-biting intensity and jaw-dropping stunts: Supercross. This high-octane stadium race filled with wild jumps, heart-stopping speeds, and fierce competition has found a perfect embodiment in rider Austin Forkner.

For many, Austin Forkner represents the heart and soul of Supercross. Although he's never claimed the title, the Missouri native is the most successful rider in the 250SX class, having faced more than his fair share of disappointments. Time and time again, setbacks such as on-track accidents have derailed his journey to victory.

Forkner shares with CNN Sports that nothing else can rival the blend of grueling physicality, intricate dynamics, and raw entertainment that Supercross offers: "[It's got] the technicality of golf, we're playing with inches out there...Then it's got the brutalness of a UFC fight... [and] the physicality of a triathlete."

With a resume that reads like a medical disaster movie, Forkner can rattle off the countless injuries he's endured as if he were reciting a laundry list. His body bears the battle scars from broken bones, fractured collarbones, torn ligaments, and dislocated hips, just to name a few.

Amidst these harrowing details, there's one injury that stands out - brain surgery. It was a shocking revelation that came to light after a fateful crash. "Last year, after a crash where I broke my back and my shoulder...they found out that I had something called an AVM," Forkner explained.

AVM, or arteriovenous malformation, is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels that can cause severe complications if left untreated. For Forkner, the diagnosis was both terrifying and daunting. "This was kind of, 'We don't know.' So, it was pretty scary in that way."

The operation itself may have been routine, but the recovery was a whole different story. "I honestly didn't really know what that meant for my career," Forkner confesses. But, like countless other challenges he's faced, Forkner refused to let fear dictate his fate.

Forkner's career has taken unexpected turns, not least of which was his decision to abandon his long-time home in California and join the newcomers at Triumph Racing America in Georgia. Despite the risks, Forkner finds comfort in the small town atmosphere that Georgia offers, remarking, "It has the Midwest kind of small towns...I'm way more at home here than I was in California."

But among all these changes, the most remarkable has to be the arrival of his son, Atlas Hope, earlier this year. "Dadhood has already changed me," Forkner admits. ""Now (racing is) important because it's my job, but whether I have a good day at the track or a bad day at the track, and I get to hold my boy, it doesn't matter."

The pressures of fatherhood weigh on his mind at the track, but Forkner is determined to dispel them and ride with his usual gusto. As he looks to the future, one can't help but wonder: How much more can this indomitable rider endure and conquer?

  1. Austin Forkner, despite facing numerous setbacks in Supercross, including a brain surgery due to an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), continues to showcase his resilience in the sports-analysis world, drawing parallels between the grueling physicality, delicate dynamics, and raw entertainment of Supercross and a hybrid of golf, UFC fights, and triathlones.
  2. In spite of his medical history, which includes a series of broken bones, fractured collarbones, torn ligaments, dislocated hips, and a life-threatening AVM discovered after a crash, Supercross champion Austin Forkner has proven to be an intimidating force, even venturing to Georgia to join Triumph Racing America, seeking comfort in its small town atmosphere after leaving California.
  3. As Austin Forkner prepares for the future, balancing the challenges of fatherhood with his intense love for Supercross, one can't help but marvel at his adaptability and sheer determination, raising questions about how much more this unyielding rider can endure and conquer in the world of sports.
