Trump's "Tenacious" Xi Dims Hope for China Deal - Updated
Deteriorating Negotiations: Trump Lowers Expectations for China Deal
In an unexpected turn of events, the US-China trade dispute appears to be heating up once more. Back in mid-May, it seemed as though the economic giants were turning the corner and de-escalating their trade conflict. However, it appears that everything pivoted in the opposite direction.
US President, Donald Trump, isn't holding his breath for a resolution anytime soon. Despite his admiration for Chinese President Xi Jinping, his latest post on Truth Social reads, "He's a crafty one, Xi; it's a real pain in the ass to deal with him." Lately, both nations have exchanged accusations, accusing each other of breaking agreements or imposing additional limitations.
While the world's two largest economies managed to put their trade war on hold since mid-May, the US has taken several actions to disrupt China's progress. This includes blocking the shipment of critical turbine parts and trying to limit China's access to vital chip technology – both of which have ruffled China's feathers.
On the other hand, there are reports suggesting that Chinese students in the US may face visa revocations. China, meanwhile, has been accused of withholding essential minerals needed for the automotive industry. The exact cause for Trump's recent latest post remains unclear. Reports earlier in the week indicated that Trump and Xi could still have a conversation this week.
Just before Trump's post, Bloomberg reported that, during the visit of European heads of state in July, China might order hundreds of aircraft from Airbus – a significant competitor to the US aircraft manufacturer, Boeing. However, in China, Boeing has faced intense pressure.
Insight: In recent years, the US-China trade dispute has been a roller coaster ride, with key players from both nations frequently shifting strategies. Since returning to power in January 2025, US President Donald Trump has been at the forefront of these fluctuations, implementing tariffs and engaging in constant dialogue with the Chinese administration. Among the key players in these negotiations are Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, as well as Vice Premier He Lifeng of China. Despite ongoing dialogues, persistent disagreements and the uncertain status of many US tariffs pose significant challenges to the resolution of this complex dispute.
