News Article: A Legacy of Heroism: Dimitrios Kalbouros Receives Uncle's NYPD Shield

The legacy of Det. Kevin Czartoryski, a dedicated NYPD officer who lost his life after serving the city for over two decades, continues to inspire his nephew, Det. Dimitrios Kalbouros. On Aug. 7, Dimitrios was surprised to receive his uncle's NYPD shield in a ceremony at City Hall, presented by Mayor Eric Adams.

Kevin Czartoryski, who died at the age of 46, spent his entire career in the NYPD, starting in 1988. He was promoted to the rank of detective after serving in the Narcotics Division. Throughout his two decades on the job, he made over 250 career arrests and earned a host of medals and City Council proclamations.

Kevin's service was not limited to the streets of New York. Following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, he worked at a temporary morgue and sifted through the remains of the Twin Towers. His dedication to duty was unwavering, even in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

In his later years, Kevin was assigned to the Hate Crimes Task Force and served in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) as a community liaison for the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL). In this role, he primarily worked with members of the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities.

Dimitrios, who joined the NYPD in 2006, was deeply moved by his uncle's commitment and sacrifice. He was inspired to follow in Kevin's footsteps and serve the city with the same sense of duty and integrity. During the shield ceremony, Dimitrios' mother pinned her brother's shield on him, a poignant moment that underscored the emotional connection between the two.

Mayor Eric Adams presented the metal shield to Dimitrios, stating that he would think of his late uncle more while on patrol due to wearing his shield. The ceremony was attended by Dimitrios' fiancée and parents, who were proud to witness the continuation of Kevin's legacy.

Prior to his work at GOAL, Kevin served in various roles within the NYPD, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the force. His career spanned over two decades, a testament to his dedication to protecting and serving the city of New York.

Dimitrios' receipt of his uncle's shield marks a significant milestone in his career and serves as a reminder of the impact Kevin had on the city and its residents. As he continues to serve, Dimitrios will carry on his uncle's legacy, striving to protect the city with the same courage and dedication that Kevin displayed throughout his career.

Sports played a significant role in the lives of the Czartoryski family, with Kevin being an avid fan and Dimitrios participating in various sports as a means to stay fit and maintain his discipline during his NYPD career.

Dimitrios, inspired by his uncle's courage and dedication, hopes to emulate Kevin's legacy not only in his police work but also in his approach to sports, demonstrating the same level of perseverance and teamwork.
