Detainee Released From Custody Connected to Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Christian Bruckner, the main suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann in 2007, was released from prison in Germany on Wednesday. Bruckner spent seven years in prison for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2019.

Despite his release, Bruckner remains a suspect in the ongoing investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance. Investigators in the UK, Portugal, and Germany are still piecing together what happened on the night Madeleine McCann disappeared. The investigation is being conducted by Britain's Metropolitan Police as well.

Bruckner has denied any involvement in Madeleine McCann's disappearance. His lawyer, Friedrich Fuelscher, confirmed that his client will be required to wear an electronic foot tag, report regularly to probation services, and give up his passport. However, the state court in Hildesheim has not disclosed whether Bruckner will have to fulfill any conditions after his release.

Bruckner spent many years in Portugal, including in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine McCann's disappearance. German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Bruckner's requirements without naming sources.

In June 2020, German prosecutors began investigating Bruckner on suspicion of murder in connection with Madeleine McCann's disappearance. This investigation was sparked by new evidence that emerged in the case.

Last year, Bruckner was acquitted over several unrelated sexual offences he was alleged to have committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. The presiding judge in Bruckner's trial stated that the evidence was insufficient for a conviction, that the court heard from unreliable witnesses, and that some had been influenced by media reports on the defendant.

Bruckner refused an interview request from Britain's Metropolitan Police. The investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance is not affected by Bruckner's release. It continues, with investigators still working to uncover the truth about what happened to Madeleine McCann all those years ago.
