Detainee from Daghestan, accused of online propagation of terrorism, compels statement of remorse in public

In recent months, the Investigative Committee of Daghestan has taken action against several young residents for spreading propaganda online. On August 12, the Committee reported opening a criminal case against a resident of Makhachkala for publicly justifying terrorism using the Internet. The young man admitted to publishing materials supporting the activities of banned organizations in a video posted on the administration's official information channels. The investigation into his case has now been completed, and the case has been sent to court. A week earlier, on August 5, the Committee announced another case, this time against a resident of the Kizilyurt District, due to an audio recording posted in a messaging app. The resident of Makhachkala and the resident of Kizilyurt are both accused of spreading propaganda, which can result in a prison sentence of five to seven years. The administration of Khasavyurt, a city in Daghestan, has published an apology video of an 18-year-old local resident accused of promoting extremist activity through social media posts. The young man's face was obscured throughout the recording, and the administration did not specify which preventive measures had been applied to the accused. The search results do not contain information about the accused men in Daghestan in July 2023 or the court handling their cases. The names of the suspects and other personal details have not been disclosed in any of these cases. The Investigative Committee of Daghestan has not published further details of the investigations. This is not the first time such cases have occurred in Daghestan. There have been several similar cases in recent months, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and action against online extremist propaganda. It is crucial to ensure the safety and security of the region's residents and to prevent the spread of extremist ideologies.
