Detained Cleric of the Armenian Apostolic Church
Gearing up for a probable pro-Russian coup in Armenia?
That's the question on everyone's mind as the leader of the "Sacred Struggle" movement, Bagrat Galstanyan, finds himself in hot water. According to News.am, an Armenian court has ordered his two-month detention.
Previously, the court had also detained several key figures associated with the so-called National Assembly of Nagorno-Karabakh. These individuals include David Galstanyan, assistant to Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Movses Sharbatyan, blogger Armen Alexanyan, and reserve colonel Mikayel Makhsudyan.
In total, arrest requests were made for 16 individuals.
Early morning searches were conducted at the homes of "Sacred Struggle" supporters in Armenia. Following a search at Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan's residence, he was taken into custody.
The Armenian Investigative Committee released a statement on Wednesday, accusing participants and organizers of the "Sacred Struggle" of planning terrorist acts and a coup d'état in Armenia. They claim that this improbable gang, consisting of former police officers, soldiers, and other individuals, was hell-bent on carrying out their nefarious plot.
The opposition vehemently denies these allegations.
The government of Nikol Pashinyan is on high alert, suspecting their political stability is under threat from a Russian-backed coup.
