Details on Austin Butler's upcoming movie "Caught Stealing"

In the heart of New York City, 1998, the gritty urban atmosphere becomes a stage for a thrilling and humorous crime caper, Caught Stealing. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, this film, based on Charlie Huston's 2004 novel of the same name, promises an intense ride filled with action, drama, and a dash of black comedy.

At the centre of the story is Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler, a former high-school baseball prodigy whose career was derailed by alcoholism. Now working as a bartender, Hank's life takes a turn when his punk-rock neighbour, Russ, played by Matt Smith, asks him to look after his cat, Tonic. This seemingly simple favour plunges Hank into a world of chaos involving various gangsters, including psychotic Russians, Hasidic drug runners, and a Puerto Rican club owner, as well as a determined cop trying to solve the mystery of Russ’s hidden stash.

The Struggle for Redemption

Caught Stealing is a testament to Hank's struggle to overcome his alcoholism and personal demons while navigating the dangerous criminal environment. Despite physical abuse, personal setbacks, and risking the lives of friends, Hank confronts his self-destructive tendencies and fights for redemption. Unlike other Aronofsky films featuring self-destructive protagonists, Caught Stealing offers a glimmer of hope and a possibility of recovery.

A City of Crime and Survival

Set against the backdrop of a chaotic New York City, the film delves into the interactions between underground criminals and the consequences for those caught in their midst. Hank's decisions are driven by his loyalty to Russ and others amidst danger and betrayal.

Friendship and Loyalty

The film also explores the bonds of friendship and loyalty. Hank Thompson, portrayed by Butler, tends a dive bar and is in a relationship with Zoe Kravitz's character, an emergency medical technician. Despite the perilous situation, their bond remains strong.

The ensemble cast includes Bad Bunny, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, and Vincent D'onofrio, adding depth and intensity to the narrative. Matt Smith, known for his roles in The Crown and House of the Dragon, sports a towering brightly coloured mohawk in the film.

Caught Stealing is set to be released in cinemas globally on August 27. Darren Aronofsky, after his 2022 drama The Whale, sought a new challenge and wanted to create a lighter, humorous film. Aronofsky was deeply moved by the twists and turns, action, and energy in the book Caught Stealing and aimed to bring it to life on the big screen. Matt Smith's pet cat in the film steals the limelight, according to Butler.

In Caught Stealing, Austin Butler delivers a gritty and compelling performance, bringing Hank Thompson to life in all his complexity. The film promises to be a rollercoaster ride of action, drama, and humour, offering a unique take on the crime thriller genre.
