Detailed Account of Boulder, Colorado Incident: Key Facts, Identity of Alleged Perpetrator, and Information on the Wounded and Presumed Victims
In a shocking turn of events on Sunday, a man hurled incendiary devices during a peaceful event in Boulder, Colorado, rallying for the release of captives held by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups in Gaza. This unsightly incident left 12 individuals injured, including four women and four men aged between 52 and 88.
Known as the "Run for Their Lives" event, this weekly gathering worldwide was part of an international campaign where Jewish community members run and walk in solidarity with the captives taken by Hamas and other Palestinian groups during their attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023. Over 230 locations across 24 countries participate in this event, with two locations in Colorado: Boulder and Denver.
The attacker used a makeshift flamethrower to lob incendiary devices at the gathering, according to police reports. Videos circulating on social media showed a shirtless man holding two glass bottles, believed to be Molotov cocktails.
So, what exactly is a Molotov cocktail? This simple yet devastating incendiary weapon comprises a bottle filled with a flammable liquid covered by a wick, which is lit on fire before being thrown at a target. The term originated during World War II, after the Soviet Union invaded Finland, and the country experienced heavy bombing. Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov insisted that the bombing was only delivering food parcels. In response, the Finns threw handmade explosives towards Soviet tanks, sardonically dubbing them "Molotov cocktails."
The vicious attacker was identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, from El Paso County. The Boulder Police Department apprehended him at the scene, while the FBI launched an investigation to classify the incident as an act of terror. Soliman was hospitalized and later booked in the Boulder County Jail for multiple charges, including attempted murder and utilizing an explosive device. During the attack, he was heard shouting "Free Palestine."
To ensure justice for the victims and the community, local authorities have pledged their unwavering commitment. Vigilance and solidarity are vital now more than ever in these divisive times. The nation's attention remains steadfast, standing together to combat such hateful incidents and support the victims' recovery. Stay informed and remain vigilant. We are stronger together.
