Jumpin' Jimminy! The Goonies Turn 40 and Here's What's Happened to the Gang
Feelin' a bit long in the tooth, ain't ya? Time has a funny way of slippin' by when you're streamin' classic films from your youth. One such reminder is the pulse-poundin', family-friendly adventure "The Goonies" from the minds of Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg.
Released on June 7, 1985, this epic treasure hunt captured the hearts of young and old alike, makin' us forget about the grind of everyday life and indulge in the spirit of adventure. But have you ever wondered what happened to the wild-eyed kids we followed down the rabbit hole? Strap in, bucko, cuz here's the skinny on our mischievous pals!
Sean Astin (Mikey Walsh)
With his plan-makin' prowess and mighty heart, Mikey was the glue that held the Goonies together. Yet, it was outside the oak-haunted forests of Oregon that Astin made his true mark. That's right—he starred as Samwise "Sam" Gamgee in Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, earnin' a starring role in Middle-earth's most epic tale.
Although he's now a Stranger Things regular and continues to act in various productions, he'll always be Hobbit Sam to the die-hard fans out there.
Ke Huy Quan (Data)
Quan's Data may have been the thesaurus-quotin' brainiac whiz kid, but he recently pulled out the big guns and leveled up to Oscar-winning status. In 2022, he nabbed an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his groundbreaking performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. He's also given us more recent appearances in the Netflix film Electric State and the Marvel series Loki.
Jeff Cohen (Chunk)
If you look closely, you might spot a subtle resemblance between Chunk and his former lawyer, Jeff Cohen. But don't be fooled—the slab-eatin', dance-ridin' chunk of man meat is long gone. Instead, Cohen made his way into the legal world, startin' a law firm specializing in entertainment industry clients. In 2008, he was even named one of the Top 35 Power Lawyers in Hollywood under 35 by The Hollywood Reporter. He even helped Ke Huy Quan land his Oscar-winning role!
Corey Feldman (Mouth)
The life of Mouth Devereaux took a wild turn after "The Goonies."While Feldman continued to act in notable projects throughout the '80s, like Stephen King's "Stand by Me—The Secret of Summer" and the grippin' horror film "The Lost Boys," he also faced darker times. He reported child abuse in Hollywood and struggled with substance abuse for years.
These personal demons didn't stop him, though. Feldman has recently dedicated himself to music as well as smaller roles in B-movies.
Josh Brolin (Brand Walsh)
While "The Goonies" may have been his first on-screen role, Brolin has since skyrocketed to superstardom. You've likely seen him in "No Country for Old Men," "Wall Street," "Milk," "Sicario," and "Dune" or battle the Avengers as the almighty Marvel villain Thanos. But alas, old Brolin has yet to take home an Oscar.
Kerri Green (Andy Carmichael)
Andy was Brand's beloved, but Kerri Green didn't quite capture the same level of fame. Instead, she founded her own production company and even stepped behind the camera to work as a director. She also occasionally appears in documentaries or interviews about "The Goonies."
Martha Plimpton (Stef)
The spunky Stef had quite an adventure with the Goonies, but Martha Plimpton didn't let that be her final gig. She's since been a regular in Hollywood, makin' a name for herself on stage, TV, and the silver screen. Plimpton has even won an Emmy for her guest role in The Good Wife and been nominated for her roles in Raising Hope and Law & Order.
