It seems that despite the hefty price tags, around half of Berlin's residents (49%) are keeping their gift expenditure consistent with the previous year, according to recent surveys. A generous 10% even plan to splurge more this holiday season, but a significant 13% have opted to cut back on gift-giving entirely.
The Info opinion research institute, who conducted the survey on behalf of Berliner Sparkasse, shared the findings. Unsurprisingly, the majority (58%, or almost six in ten) of the 1011 participants linked their smaller budgets to the alarming rise in prices. A staggering 46% also claimed they simply had less money to spare.
The festive spirit, however, remains unbroken among Berliners. A large portion (nearly half) of the respondents stated they intended to spend between 100 and 500 euros on gifts, while around a third planned to stay within the more modest range of up to 100 euros. An optimistic 10% aimed for a lavish spending of over 500 euros.
So, what sort of gifts top Berliners' wish lists? Quite surprisingly, their hearts yearn for an adventure! According to the survey, a whopping 51% expressed a longing for a trip, while tickets to events, concerts, or museum visits (37%) or delectable dinner invitations (36%) also ranked high. Interestingly, an equal number of individuals (32%) also wished for cold, hard cash.
Despite the mounting customs fees and escalating inflation, Berliners appear adamant in their quest to continue the gift-giving tradition. The alarming rate of price increases has led an appalling 58% of respondents to acknowledge that they will scale back their gift budgets significantly.
