Desperate to rescue her, I would have sacrificed anything.
In tragic news, former biathlete Laura Dahlmeier has lost her life after a rockfall incident on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram mountains. The accident occurred on Monday, July 28, 2025, at approximately 18,700 feet (5,700 meters) altitude.
Rescue attempts were hampered by adverse weather conditions, which created a risky environment due to falling rocks in the Hushe Valley area of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Despite these challenges, Dahlmeier's management team and rescuers confirmed her death instantly after the incident.
Mountaineer Thomas Huber, who was part of the rescue team, expressed his condolences, stating that Dahlmeier lived her dream until the very end and was a role model for how life should be filled with love, passion, and fire. Huber also requested respect in reporting and comments regarding the impromptu press conference the day before.
Marina Krauss, Dahlmeier's rope partner, was able to descend independently and was not directly in the path of the rockfall. Experts believe that the high temperatures could have caused the rocks to dislodge during the incident. However, the exact cause of the rockfall remains unclear.
Dahlmeier's body remains unrecovered in the area, as per her explicit wish. A memorial has been set up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, her hometown, where the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising invited friends, neighbors, colleagues, and former classmates to hold a service at the memorial site.
A new memorial site has been set up in the Parish Church of St. Martin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for Dahlmeier. The Laila Peak remains open to climbers despite the tragedy, and the closure of mountains after accidents is not a common practice.
This unfortunate incident marks the third climber death in the region this year alone, raising concerns about the safety of mountaineering activities in the area. Our thoughts are with Dahlmeier's family, friends, and the entire biathlon community during this difficult time.
