Desperate residents of Gaza seek assistance at American-supported relief centers, potentially signaling a crisis in Hamas' credibility
Gaza's Aid Distribution Center Opens Amid Hamas Crisis
The Tel al-Sultan area in Gaza has recently seen the establishment of a new aid distribution center. Drone footage released by the Israel Defense Forces shows the setup of this center (Video: IDF).
The militant group Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip for years, is under intense pressure to change its stance as its influence and support continue to dwindle. Joe Truzman, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, suggests that Hamas is trying to maintain its authority by opposing the new aid distribution mechanism, backed by the United States and Israel.
Images of starvation have persisted for several months due to Israel's aid blockade over the Gaza Strip. However, calls for peace have increased as Hamas warned this week that any Palestinians accepting food aid for their families would face repercussions.
Despite threats, displaced Palestinians flocked to the aid sites erected by the U.S.-Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), resulting in scenes of chaos at least one distribution location on Tuesday. The Israel Defense Forces reported that soldiers fired warning shots to regain control of the situation.
Official casualty counts were conflicting, with the United Nations Human Rights Office reporting 47 injuries during the gunfire, while the Hamas-run health ministry claimed one fatality and 48 injuries, though this could not be independently verified by our website Digital.
The GHF issued a statement on Wednesday, claiming no Palestinians have been detained or questioned while receiving aid and that no Palestinians had been shot or killed while trying to get aid.
Truzman posits that Hamas aims to portray the aid delivery in a negative light and use the chaos to regain power. He stated that Hamas previously controlled aid flows and used it for governance, to reinforce loyalty, reward patronage networks, and maintain internal control.
However, the erosion of Hamas' influence poses a threat to the group, according to Truzman. With Hamas sidelined from the aid process, the group may be facing a legitimacy crisis. The GHF has distributed about 8,000 food boxes so far, consisting of 462,000 meals, despite the chaotic scenes witnessed during the initial aid disbursement. Further aid deliveries are planned for tomorrow.
One Gazan expressed his frustration with Hamas, stating that the group had failed to secure affordable and accessible food for the civilians. The man added that the Palestinian population is desperate and willing to turn to any external aid providers as long as their needs are met.
In a recent report, the Wilson Center found that nearly half of the Palestinian civilians interviewed had no trust in Hamas' leadership, while roughly a third supported the group. Support is believed to have dropped further in the months following the October 7, 2023 terror attacks.
Truzman stated that the new aid mechanism has the potential to improve living conditions for Palestinians beyond what Hamas has managed during times of war. If successful, the mechanism may expose Hamas' governance failures, particularly its prioritization of power retention over the welfare of its population.
