Germanplaymaker Florian Wirtz's Future Remains Uncertain Amid Transfer Speculation

Berlin - Rudi Voeller, the DFB sporting director, expressed his hopes that Bayer Leverkusen's star midfielder, Florian Wirtz, would stay with the club for another year before considering a move.

Speaking at a Telekom event in Berlin, Voeller admitted that a decision regarding Wirtz's sporting future might not come soon. Potential suitors could range from Bayern Munich or FC Liverpool to Leverkusen itself. However, Voeller suggested that an extended stay at Leverkusen would be ideal.

"My preference is for him to remain with the team for another year before making a move. My Leverkusen colleagues and I could live with that, but I'm unsure if other clubs share the same sentiment," Voeller said.

Wirtz is contracted to Bayer Leverkusen until the end of June 2027. The club is prepared to sell the offensive player if a club is willing to pay around 150 million euros.

Rumors have circulated for weeks about a potential top transfer for the 22-year-old. Recent discussions reportedly took place in England, but Manchester City appears to have withdrawn from the negotiations. Within the Bundesliga, only Bayern Munich is being considered as a potential future employer.

Although Voeller declined to comment on the status of the negotiations, he acknowledged that there is plenty of speculation surrounding Wirtz's future. "Many are aware that I still have a small office in Leverkusen, but I'm not privy to all the information these days," Voeller joked.

Voeller believes Wirtz's performance for the German national team in the Final Four of the Nations League will not be affected by the transfer speculation. The German team will gather in Herzogenaurach on May 30 to prepare for the UEFA tournament, with the semi-final scheduled for June 4 against Portugal in Munich and a potential final four days later against Spain or France.

While the latest enrichment data indicates that Liverpool is actively pursuing Wirtz and talks between the two parties are progressive, there is still no definitive decision regarding the transfer. The potential for a swap deal between Liverpool and Leverkusen could ease the financial burden on Liverpool. Bayer Leverkusen currently values Wirtz at around €150 million.
