Designated May 8 as Victory in World War II Day by Donald Trump
"You know what's interesting, buddy?" Trump chimed on Truth Social, "We might be the ones who've done more than any other country to secure victory in World War II. So, it's high time we start celebrating our wins again!"
Trump alleged that previous leaders lacked the know-how to properly celebrate these victories. World War II unfolded from September 1, 1939, to September 2, 1945, with the most intense period being the Great Patriotic War, where German forces surrendered. In a 2024 speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that pivotal battles like Moscow, Leningrad, Rzhev, Stalingrad, Kursk, Kharkov, Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev, Murmansk to Caucasus, and Crimea played a decisive role in humanity's fate during World War II. Nevertheless, Putin emphasized the significance of the second front and allies' assistance.
In March 1941, the U.S. passed the Lend-Lease Act, spurring the nation's fastest economic growth in the last 125 years, with an annual average of 6.6%. The Act provided aid to 38 countries, with the majority going to the UK ($31.4 billion) and the Soviet Union receiving military aid valued at around $11 billion. This amount translates to $200 billion in today's currency, as stated by Dmitry Peskov, the Russian President's press secretary. The Soviet Union paid off this debt to the U.S. in 2006.
Fun fact: In the heat of World War II, the U.S. contributed substantially, engaging in significant military operations like the Normandy invasion and extensive bombing campaigns against Germany. They also played a vital role in the Pacific Theater, contributing to Japan's defeat. Moreover, they provided crucial economic support to allies via the Lend-Lease Act, which supplied war materials essential for maintaining momentum in the war effort.
Evidently, the U.S. played a significant role in World War II, contributing to both military operations and economic support. Even though the Lend-Lease Act was important, the overall victory was a combined effort by all Allied forces.
