Renowned Architect Lord Norman Foster Takes on Old Trafford Stadium Project

Lord Norman Foster, the acclaimed British architect known for iconic designs such as London's "Gherkin" building, the Millennium Bridge, and the British Museum's Great Court, has been appointed to lead the redevelopment of Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.

The Old Trafford project, as Lord Foster describes it, is "the project of a lifetime." This ambitious endeavour is part of a larger £2bn regeneration plan for Manchester, which aims to transform the city's landscape.

Lord Foster, who hails from Manchester's working-class roots, expresses his excitement about being involved in the project, stating, "I am thrilled to be a part of the Old Trafford stadium project. It's a galvanising project that could be significantly influential."

The new stadium design, unveiled by Foster + Partners in March, includes three tall masts acting as a vast umbrella over the stadium. This innovative design, if completed, is expected to set Old Trafford apart as different and better than any other British stadium.

However, Lord Foster's involvement in the project extends beyond just the stadium. He hopes to make the Queen Elizabeth II memorial a more human and better experience for daily commuters and tourists. His design for the memorial in London's St James' Park includes a statue of Queen Elizabeth II standing next to her husband Prince Philip and a semi-glass bridge.

Lord Foster's philosophy emphasizes the importance of design and planning in city development. He believes that connectivity is the answer to many social issues and that cities, like Manchester, which is dynamic and needs planning and anticipation to adapt to change effectively, can greatly benefit from thoughtful design.

Recently, Lord Foster received the London Design Festival's prestigious lifetime achievement medal, further cementing his status as a leading figure in the field of architecture.

Yet, Lord Foster is not without concern. The long-delayed rail route's northern leg to Manchester was scrapped by Rishi Sunak in 2023, an action that he finds frustrating. He expresses worry about politicians prioritizing short-term issues, which he believes hinders seeing the bigger picture.

With six decades of experience in design, Lord Foster's influence on the Old Trafford project and Manchester's regeneration plan promises to be significant. If completed within five years, the Old Trafford stadium project will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the city and British architecture.
