Sovereignty clinched the coveted Kentucky Derby this past Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
The race kicked off with a rocky start, with Bob Baffert's Citizen Bull taking the early lead and Journalism, the early favorite, lagging behind. Journalism faced some obstacles on the initial turn, causing jockey Umberto Rispoli to move him to the outside.
Close encounters between Sovereignty and Journalism occurred at the eighth pole, but Sovereignty, ridden by junior jockey Junior Alvarado, unexpectedly gained the lead.

Sovereignty overshadowed the majority of the race and didn't make a significant move until the final turn.
In the final stretch, Neoequos, the longshot at 42-1, held the top spot initially. However, Sovereignty and Journalism managed to secure the lead. The two horses ran neck and neck until Sovereignty edged out the favorite. Journalism started at 3-1 and ended at 7-2.
Sovereignty crossed the finish line at 2:02.31. Baeza placed third, Final Gambit finished fourth, and Owen Almighty came in fifth.
Trainer Bill Mott tallied his second Kentucky Derby triumph. He previously won the 2019 Derby with Country House, after Maximum Security was disqualified for encroaching upon other horses during the race.

This rainy day at Churchill Downs saw fans donning ponchos, braving the wet weather.
Saturday's event marked Baffert's return to the Run for the Roses, following a three-year hiatus due to a suspension linked to 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit's failed drug test. Medina Spirit tragically passed away in December of the same year.
Interestingly, every participating horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby can be traced back to the legendary thoroughbred, Secretariat. As the winner of the 1973 Triple Crown, Secretariat commands a lasting legacy[3]. Some key aspects of his influence include:
Enduring records - Secretariat's Churchill Downs record for 1¼ miles in the Derby (1:59.40) remains unbroken, as does his Belmont Stakes dirt-track record for 1½ miles[3].
Recent underdog victories - Despite Secretariat's lineage dominating the field, recent winners like 2022's Rich Strike (80-1 odds) and 2024's Mystik Dan (18-1) demonstrate that pedigree doesn't always guarantee victory[1][3].
Unpredictable factors - Despite all the horses in the derby being descendants of Secretariat, the race remains highly unpredictable due to factors like first-time distance challenges, large-field chaos, and environmental factors[1].
Secrets about the Derby's history make it both a testament to Secretariat's legacy and a playground for up-and-coming champions[1][3].
