Derby Sovereignty Clinches Victory in the 151st Kentucky Race
The Wet and Wild Triumph of Sovereignty at the 2025 Kentucky Derby
Sovereignty stormed past a field of contenders to clinch the coveted title at the 156th running of the Kentucky Derby, greeted by soggy conditions at Churchill Downs on a chilly Saturday night.
Initially, Sovereignty entered the race with 5-1 odds, but it was clear the bookies underestimated this powerhouse. Meanwhile, the heavy favourite for the evening, Journalism, finished a close second.
With a whopping $3.1 million in winners' purse on the line, Sovereignty's victorious team - including owner Godolphin, jockey Junior Alvarado, and trainer William Mott - will undoubtedly be celebrating long into the night.
However, things didn't go smoothly for Journalism in the first turn, causing jockey Umberto Rispoli to move him to the outside. In the final stretch, both horses tangled at the eighth pole before Sovereignty and Junior Alvarado pulled away to secure their victorious win.
In the end, the winning team crossed the finish line in 2:02.31. Among the top contenders, Baeza finished third, Final Gambit came in fourth, and Owen Almighty rounded out the top five.
Citizen Bull, the lone entry from six-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, initially set the pace, but the runners-up were no match for Sovereignty's relentless drive. It's worth noting that Baffert made a comeback after a three-year suspension, following Medina Spirit's controversial first-place finish and subsequent drug test failure in 2022.
Sovereignty had already emerged as a strong contender after placing second in the Florida Derby in March and winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes earlier in the month, as well as the Street Sense Stakes in October.
Trainer William Mott, who has an impressive record as a former Derby winner (2019), was ecstatic about the triumphant win. "This one got there the right way," Mott enthused. "He's done well, he's a great horse, he comes from a great organization, and I can't say enough about the horse and the organization that started him out and made this happen."
Interestingly, Godolphin - the racing stable of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - also had a reason to celebrate. Besides Sovereignty's Derby victory, their filly Good Cheer claimed the Kentucky Oaks the previous day, and Ruling Court - a son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify - triumphed at the 2,000 Guineas in Britain earlier on the same day.
Regardless of the rain that fell sporadically throughout the day, the fans gathered in Churchill Downs were unstoppable. The crowds bet, drank, ate, smoked, and shopped for souvenirs, despite the 60-degree temperature that made the day feel cool for both animals and spectators alike.
