Derby Contenders 2025, Starting Gate Placements, Odds at Dawn
Get ready for the thrilling Fastest Two Minutes in Sports this weekend at the 151st Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky! The first jewel of the Triple Crown kicks off on Saturday, May 3, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
Last year's edition was a nail-biter, with a neck-and-neck photo finish between Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone, and my pick for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, Japan's Forever Young. Surprisingly, Mystik Dan managed to come out on top despite being a 20-1 longshot on the morning-line (ML). Sierra Leone was the second betting choice at 3-1, and Forever Young, my pick, started at 10-1.
You might think that horse racing is a game of probability, but did you know it's actually a "parimutuel" event? This French term basically means "pool betting," making it a contest against fellow gamblers instead of the house. The odds change as more money is collected, and the race begins.
Horses like Journalism, the betting favorite on the ML (3-1), and the return of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, a two-time Triple Crown winner, make this year's Derby particularly exciting. Don't forget that the Derby is the 12th race on a day full of "stakes" races, with the Kentucky Oaks for three-year-old fillies running on Friday. Stay tuned for my picks to win and exotics, including an Exacta and/or Trifecta, later this week. I'll be spending far too much time preparing for a race that only lasts two minutes!

Horses, history, and high-stakes betting—what more could a sports enthusiast ask for? The parimutuel system's roots trace back to 1870 in France, with the introduction of parimutuel betting systems becoming the norm at the Kentucky Derby in 1875. The system's popularity and financial success can be attributed to the removal of traditional bookmaking methods, which were often criticized for their lack of transparency. Historically, the Kentucky Derby faced several legal challenges, but the introduction of parimutuel betting helped secure its ongoing success.
The parimutuel system works by collecting all bets into a pool, with the odds reflecting the number of bets placed on each horse. As betting progresses, the odds change based on popular support. The track takes a percentage of the total pool as its commission before distributing the remaining amount among winners proportionally. This dynamic system creates an engaging betting experience for participants worldwide.
By understanding the workings of the parimutuel system, you can gain valuable insights when placing your bets. For example, a significant decrease in a long shot's odds indicates influential bettors have placed large wagers, reflecting new information or confidence in the horse's chances. On the other hand, an increase in a favorite's odds might suggest a lack of support or emerging doubts about its performance. So bet wisely, and may the best horse win!
