Denzel Washington criticizes cancel culture, asserting that faith holds greater importance than follower count
In an interview with Spike Lee, Denzel Washington expressed his disinterest and dismissal of cancel culture. The renowned actor, known for his work in "Gladiator II" which earned him a Golden Globe for best performance by a male actor in a supporting role this year, questioned the importance of public support and the concept of being "canceled."
"Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?" Washington asked, emphasizing his indifference towards societal approval and public opinion. He further stated, "You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up."
Washington, a Christian who follows God rather than humans or public opinion, underscored his faith over worldly approval. He indicated that his retirement, previously rumoured, is about five years out, and his current focus is on the "return" part of his life, where he believes in giving back and making a difference.
The actor had a heated encounter with a photographer on the Cannes Film Festival's red carpet, but his stance on cancel culture remains clear. Washington does not follow social media trends and does not care about public support or followers. Instead, he follows the "heavenly spirit," not man, and expresses hope in humanity but skepticism about its current state.
