Denza's new electric sports car gets a name—via public contest

Denza, BYD's premium car brand, has launched a naming contest for its upcoming sports car. The competition invites participants to suggest suffixes for the Denza Z model, with entries accepted until April 10. Winners will receive prizes including gadgets, an electric scooter, and an invitation to the car's official launch.

The Denza Z will arrive in three versions: Hardtop, Convertible, and Track. Positioned as a high-performance electric vehicle, it follows the brand's reputation for blending luxury with cutting-edge technology. The contest rules require suffixes to be concise, elegant, and free of negative meanings. Submissions can be in any language, but they must align with Denza's premium image. After the April 10 deadline, the company will review all entries based on brand strategy, product positioning, and intellectual property considerations before selecting the final name.

Denza sits above BYD's mainstream Ocean and Dynasty series, catering to a more upscale market. The brand's name, derived from the Chinese Tengshi ('rising power and momentum'), reflects its ambition in the electric vehicle sector. Pricing for Denza models typically ranges from 250,000 to 500,000 RMB (around $36,000 to $72,000), undercutting rivals like Porsche's Taycan and Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N, which start near €100,000.

A concept version of the Denza Z was unveiled a year ago, with prototypes undergoing testing in early 2024. The final production model is expected to combine sharp styling with strong performance, targeting buyers in the growing mid-to-high-end electric sports car segment. The naming contest closes on April 10, after which Denza will announce the chosen suffix. The winning entry will feature on the Hardtop, Convertible, and Track versions of the Z sports car.

With its competitive pricing and premium positioning, the Denza Z aims to challenge established brands in the electric performance market. The model's launch will mark another step in BYD's expansion into higher-end vehicle segments.
