Basketball Star Schröder Wins Athlete of the Year Award - Dennis Schröder crowned Lower Saxony's Athlete of the Year for 2025

Dennis Schröder has been named Lower Saxony's Athlete of the Year for 2025. The 32-year-old basketball star received the honour at the Ball des Sports Niedersachsen in Hannover, marking his second win after first claiming the title in 2023.

Schröder's latest achievement follows a strong year in both club and international basketball. He led Germany to victory at the European basketball championship in 2024, solidifying his reputation as a key player for the national team.

In the NBA, he began the 2025-26 season with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 0.8 steals per game over 15 appearances. After a February 2026 trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers, his numbers shifted slightly—11.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 0.6 steals in 34 games. His minutes per game dropped from 27 to 24.9, though his assist numbers stayed steady.

The award winners were chosen by a panel of experts alongside a public vote. Last year's title went to handball player Renars Uscins of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. This year, Lea Meyer of VfL Löningen took home Female Athlete of the Year, while the German men's quadruple sculls rowing team—including Lower Saxony's Pia Greiten and Frauke Hundeling—won Team of the Year.

Schröder's recognition comes as he continues to make an impact in both the NBA and international competition. The award highlights his ongoing influence in German sports, following his leadership in Germany's European championship win. His move to the Cleveland Cavaliers adds another chapter to his evolving career.
