During a recent vote in the Danish parliament, the Liberal Alliance party refused to support a bill granting citizenship to over 2,000 individuals. The reason? They want the government to implement a system for screening future applicants.
This decision comes after the Liberal Alliance leader Alex Vanopslagh proposed the idea of screening citizenship applicants earlier in the year. However, the debate surrounding the screening of prospective citizens was overshadowed when three applicants were summoned for individual interviews, causing controversy and questioning the compatibility with human rights conventions.
The Ministry of Immigration and Integration announced they would look into screening potential citizens' personal views, seemingly accommodating the Liberal Alliance's proposal. Yet, the party remains unimpressed and abstained from the vote.
The more than 2,000 applicants included in the bill will receive citizenship, as it received sufficient support in parliament. A spokesperson for the Liberal Alliance explained their position by saying, "We want an agreement, not just a study into this. We're not here to put our policies into the government's pickling jar."
In addition to the Liberal Alliance, the Conservative and Denmark Democrat parties abstained, while the anti-immigration Danish People's Party voted against the bill. The government and all left-wing and center-left parties supported it.
The Liberal Alliance's decision to abstain from voting has consequences beyond the current citizenship bill. By not backing the naturalization bills, they breach a formal citizenship agreement made with several other parties in April 2021, effectively losing influence over citizenship legislation.
