Denmark's July expected to rank among the top ten wettest months in recorded history

Denmark's July 2025 has experienced an unusually high amount of rainfall, potentially placing it among the top ten wettest Julys on record since 1874.

According to the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), some parts of the country have received between 50 to 150 millimeters of rain during this period, with the heaviest rain concentrated in a belt spanning Jutland, Funen, and Zealand. Copenhagen, while seeing lesser rainfall, has still experienced enough to disrupt normal activities.

The rainiest July ever in Denmark was two years ago in 2023, when 141.2 millimeters of rain fell nationwide. As of early August 2025, the total rainfall for July 2025 is 105.3 millimeters, suggesting that it could potentially move up the list.

The forecast for Funen could play a significant role in determining the final ranking of July 2025. On Wednesday, the DMI has forecast 25 to 35 millimeters of rain in six hours, with a further 7 to 8 millimeters expected by the end of Thursday. This could potentially exceed the 30-50 millimeters predicted for parts of southern and western Jutland, and if it does, July 2025 has a good chance of becoming one of the ten wettest months of July.

The heavy rainfall on July 21st-23rd contributed significantly to the total rainfall for July 2025. Over 100 millimeters of rain was recorded at 27 different stations across Denmark during these days.

July 2024 is also in the top ten, with 114.3 millimeters placing it at number eight. The tenth place on the list of the wettest ever Julys measured by DMI is shared by 1880 and 2002, both with 111.0 millimeters of rain.

It is worth noting that this is the third year in a row that Denmark has recorded over 100 millimeters of rainfall in July. However, no detailed list or precise rainfall totals for the top 10 wettest Julys are available from the provided sources.

The DMI has issued a weather alert for heavy rain and "cloudburst" downpours in parts of southern and western Jutland between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening. This is the first time such an alert has been issued in Denmark.

The heavy rainfall forecasted for Funen on Wednesday and Thursday could potentially propel July 2025 into the top ten wettest Julys in Danish history. Moreover, the recent advancements in weather-forecasting technology might enable a more accurate prediction of the rainfall, thereby increasing the chances of this July joining the ranks of the wettest Julys in Denmark's art of climatology and meteorology records.
