Denmark Unveils $8.77B Defense Boost for Greenland Amidst Geopolitical Tensions
Denmark has unveiled a massive 56.4 billion Danish Krone ($8.77 billion) defense boost, with a significant portion allocated to bolstering its presence in Greenland. The announcement, made on October 10, 2025, comes amidst rising geopolitical tensions in the region and political tension with the United States.
The investment includes a substantial acquisition of 16 Lockheed Martin F-35 fifth-generation fighter jets, valued at 27.4 billion Danish Krone. This will bring the Danish Air Force's fleet to 43 units, enabling new combat aircraft tasks. Alongside the F-35s, Denmark plans to acquire Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) wingman drones to support operational task solving.
The package also includes a new Arctic Command headquarters in Nuuk, Greenland, and provision for maritime patrol aircraft. Additionally, Denmark is investing in a North Atlantic submarine cable between Denmark and Greenland, drone procurements, and developing a radar capability in East Greenland. The government is also considering a deal for a pair of Arctic ships and access to icebreaker capability.
The 27.4 billion Danish Krone Arctic spending plan focuses on land and maritime investments, with a heavy emphasis on boosting Greenland's defenses. This significant investment reflects Denmark's commitment to strengthening its military presence in the Arctic region and addressing geopolitical concerns.
