Denmark secures World Games gold in Chengdu competition
In a significant milestone for Danish archery, Mathias Fullerton and Sofie Louise Dam Marcussen clinched the compound mixed team title at the Archery World Cup event in 2025, securing Denmark's spot at the compound mixed team event in the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The win against Mexico, by a narrow margin of 156-155, set the stage for the debut of the compound mixed team event at the LA28 Games. This marks the first time the archery programme will expand to include this discipline in the Olympic Games.
Fullerton, who was near-flawless in the match, did not stray from the 10-ring until the final arrow. His consistent performance demonstrated Denmark's elite status in compound archery, positioning them as strong contenders for the new Olympic event.
Andrea Becerra and Sebastián García represented Mexico in the final, but they were unable to match Denmark's performance. Marcussen, speaking after the match, called the victory "amazing" and praised the team chemistry that kept the pressure at bay. Mexico never found the run of 10s needed to flip momentum back in the match.
This victory comes with impeccable timing, as the compound mixed team will make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. Denmark's elite archers are openly targeting a podium finish at the 2028 Olympics, with Fullerton stating that the Olympics unlocks funding and possibilities for a small nation to be one of the best in the world.
The winning score was achieved on the lakeside stage in Qinglong Lake Park, where the atmosphere was electric. Denmark's triumph at the World Games in Chengdu, China, adds to their growing list of achievements in compound archery, further solidifying their position as strong contenders for the Olympics.
