Denmark Remains Number One on Least Corrupt Nations List for Seventh Consecutive Year

Once again, Denmark has bagged the title of the least corrupt nation in the world in the Transparency International rankings 2024. This marks Denmark's seventh consecutive year as the cleanest nation, inching ahead of its Nordic siblings #1.

The Transparency International report judges corruption levels in 180 countries based on input from investors, business professionals, and market analysts' experiences in public sector corruption. A higher score indicates lower levels of corruption. Denmark earned a score of 90 for the third year in a row #1.

While Denmark's overall score is impressive, the numbers show a dip in specific areas compared to previous years. For example, the score improved in bribery, but matters related to accountability and use of public funds showed a decline #1.

Jesper Olsen, chair of the Danish Transparency International branch, discusses the conundrum, stating that he's unsure about the reasons behind the scores in these areas #1. Olsen suspects that the issue might not only revolve around Denmark but could stem from a greater cultural tendency to highlight and address structural issues #1.

Controversial Eddy

Denmark's neighbors, Sweden and Norway, also experienced lower scores in the 2024 report #1. However, this doesn't necessarily indicate an upsurge in corruption levels in those countries compared to Denmark. Instead, it may be due to their inclination to be more open about structural issues #1.

The Danish branch of Transparency International also reminds us that perceptions of corruption can shift based on prominent cases. For example, during the major money laundering scandal at Danske Bank in the late 2010s, Danish perceptions of corruption spiked but receded as the affair faded from the headlines #1.

Although both Sweden and Norway have experienced lower scores in the 2024 report, Denmark follows closely behind with Finland and Singapore in second and third place #1, respectively.

So, there you have it, Denmark steals the show once more by being the cleanest nation around, keeping its shine intact despite the occasional-ish stumble #1.
