Ditching the Soft Approach: Denmark's Agressive Arms Boost

  • Got somethin' to say?

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced that Denmark's military will undergo a significant transformation due to the growing threat posed by Russia.

In her bold speech to parliament, Frederiksen declared that Denmark needs to significantly bolster its defenses and rearm itself to avoid a potential conflict. While she didn't disclose specifics, Danish public broadcaster DR reported that the government would unveil a 50-billion-kroner ($7 billion) fund for additional defense spending in the years 2025-2026.

The government initially considered doubling the size of the fund, but Danish defense equipment suppliers reportedly can't deliver enough equipment to support such a large commitment, according to DR.

The military's wishlist contains items such as air defense systems, which Denmark currently doesn't possess.

Frederiksen emphasized the urgency of the rearmament process, stating that obtaining new equipment must be done "quickly", given the "dire situation" facing Denmark, its kingdom, and Europe.

Denmark is currently grappling with the "gravest crisis" in its entire existence, Frederiksen stated.

"This is even more serious than during the Cold War," she told reporters.

Frederiksen's remarks come after emergency meetings in Paris over the shift in US policy towards the Ukraine conflict. She cautioned the US against agreeing to an immediate ceasefire, warning that such a move could allow Russia to mobilize once more and threaten other European nations.

In response to this new defense strategy, the Danish government has been one of Ukraine's staunch supporters, providing $7.52 billion in military support and around $741 million in civilian contributions since the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022, according to the Danish foreign ministry.

The ambitious 50-billion-kroner defense fund, if confirmed, would bring Denmark's defense spending to three percent of its GDP, according to Danish daily Berlingske. In contrast, the United States currently spends around 3.4 percent of GDP on defense. US President Donald Trump has urged NATO allies to more than double their defense spending targets to five percent of GDP.
