Denmark stays the cleanest nation on the corruption world stage for a seventh consecutive year. Meanwhile, potential Trump tariffs on pharma, counterfeit goods on the rise, and more news from Denmark. Let's dive in!

Corruption-Free Denmark, Again!

Denmark ranks as the least corrupt country in public administration, according to the annual Transparency International report. Beating its Nordic counterparts, the Scandinavian country secures the top spot for the seventh year in a row.

"Most Danes likely agree that they don't need to dish out cash for doctor visits or police stops," said Jesper Olsen, Danish branch chair of Transparency International. The ranking factors in opinions from investors, business professionals, and analysts.

Trump's Tariff Threat Hangs over Denmark

U.S. President Donald Trump is ruminating over tariffs on pharmaceuticals, cars, and computer chips, Reuters reports, following Trump's announcement of steel and aluminum tariffs the previous day.

But the specifics of those tariffs on pharma, cars, and chipsets remain unspecified. If enacted, they could affect numerous Danish pharmaceutical companies, reliant on the U.S. market. However, not all Danish exports are imported, as Novo Nordisk, Denmark's largest firm, has significant U.S.-based production, thus escaping the tariffs.

Total Danish exports to the U.S. reached a staggering 366 billion kroner in 2024, making the U.S. Denmark's top export market, as per Statistics Denmark figures.

Fake Goods on the Rise; Customs Cracks Down

Nine out of ten items checked during Copenhagen Airport spot-checks are suspected counterfeits, according to the Tax Ministry. Besides weapons, narcotics, and cash, the Danish Customs Agency has seized a multitude of counterfeit goods.

"Spot checks at Copenhagen Airport indicate a marked surge in counterfeit products," Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund shared. "The safety of our consumers must be paramount. More stringent controls will be implemented shortly."

Baltic Sea at Risk: The Shadow Fleet

As the "Russian shadow fleet" traverses the shallow Baltic waters, the risk of a devastating oil spill increases. Experts sound the alarm as Russia circumvents Western sanctions on oil exports by operating an extensive network of tankers that lack Western insurance and are in a state of decrepitude, according to AFP.

Roughly 430 vessels worldwide are included in the shadow fleet, and a significant portion of them pass through Danish straits due to Russia’s reliance on its Baltic ports for crude oil exports.

"The Russian shadow fleet has significantly increased the risk of a catastrophic oil spill," said Mikko Hirvi, head of maritime safety at the Finnish Border Guard.
