Demonstrations persist in Ludwigsfelde - Initial Event
The Christopher Street Days (CSD) are making their way through Brandenburg this summer, with several towns hosting these significant events. This Saturday, Ludwigsfelde will be the first to host the CSD, followed by Rathenow on August 30, Frankfurt (Oder) on September 13, and Oranienburg on September 27. The series of events will culminate in Cottbus on October 15.
The CSD events in these towns are intended to remind us of the rights of queer people, following the tradition of the original CSD events in New York. The organizers of the Ludwigsfelde CSD aim to promote diversity and hope for several hundred participants.
While the CSD events in Rathenow, Frankfurt (Oder), Oranienburg, and Cottbus are planned for the months of August, September, and October, no specific date for the CSD event in Oranienburg has been mentioned earlier in this article.
Brandenburg has seen some resistance from conservative or right-wing groups in the past, with counter-protests occurring occasionally. However, no counter-events from the far-right scene have been registered for the CSD events in Rathenow, Frankfurt (Oder), Oranienburg, or Cottbus.
In contrast, the CSD in Bautzen, Saxony, is scheduled for Sunday, August 10, and a counter-demonstration has also been registered. The police in Bautzen see a threat of violent clashes at the CSD demonstration.
The history of CSD in Germany began in 1979, growing into major pride parades with strong public participation and political significance. Counter-protests have been sporadic and generally less prominent or smaller-scale, sometimes arising from conservative or right-wing groups opposing LGBTQ+ visibility.
Recent political climates, especially with conservative administrations, have increased tensions around Pride events, occasionally manifesting in counter-protests or symbolic refusals (e.g., not displaying the rainbow flag on Bundestag).
Despite these occasional challenges, CSD events in Germany, including Brandenburg, continue largely as vibrant celebrations combined with political activism for LGBTQ+ rights, with counter-protests remaining exceptions rather than the norm.
The CSD in Ludwigsfelde is set to start at 2:00 PM, and no counter-event from the far-right scene has been registered in Ludwigsfelde. The organizers are hopeful for a peaceful and joyful event.
As the CSD events continue across Brandenburg, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and the importance of solidarity and celebration in the face of adversity.

The organizers of the CSD in Ludwigsfelde strive to foster diversity and encourage a peaceful and joyful event, recognizing the CSD as more than just a lifestyle event but a platform for political activism and general-news discussions on LGBTQ+ rights. In light of past resistance from conservative or right-wing groups, the lack of registered counter-events from far-right scenes in Brandenburg serves as a step towards a more accepting society.
