Across the United States, thousands took to the streets to protest against President Donald Trump. In the nation's capital, Washington D.C., over 4,000 people gathered near the White House and the Washington Monument. Protests of similar sizes took place in cities like New York, Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, and Chicago, among others. Organizers claimed “millions” participated in over 1,300 gatherings, though no official numbers provide confirmation.
Various organizations called for a nationwide day of action and events of all sizes in every U.S. state under the theme "Hands Off." Initially, organizers expected hundreds of thousands to participate, but they later claimed millions took part—however, no specific numbers were given. The Washington D.C. police did not provide an estimate for their city's turnout, but social media quickly filled with photos and videos of large crowds across the country.
Trump: A Threat to Democracy?
In Washington, protesters held signs calling to defend the constitution, remove Trump from office, and protect social programs. Other signs read "Hands Off Democracy," "Stop the Coup," and criticizing Trump as an "aspiring autocrat." Protesters from North Carolina and Virginia, such as Trish, Laura, Laurel, and Jacky, voiced their concerns about the current political climate, claiming it is dangerous. Jacky, in particular, criticized Trump's alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin over democratically elected leaders.
Criticism at the gatherings wasn't limited to Trump alone; tech billionaire Elon Musk also faced criticism for his increasing involvement in government affairs. Despite the drizzle, thousands in New York protested against both Trump and Musk in Bryant Park, holding signs that read "Pull the Plug on Elon" and "I can only write this because there was a Department of Education."
The Discontentment Grows
People protested against the dismantling of U.S. agencies, cuts to foreign aid, immigration policies, and everything Trump and his administration stood for.
Since taking office, Trump has begun radically restructuring the government apparatus, firing federal employees en masse and dismantling several agencies. His many controversial decisions and actions have sparked outrage both domestically and internationally. The Republican has taken a hard stance against migrants and minorities. Trump's policies, combined with the economic uncertainty created by his global tariff package, have weighed heavily on the public.
Following his announcement of controversial new tariffs, Trump left for an extended golf weekend in Florida, leaving the White House during the protests. However, protests against him could also be seen in Florida. Through the first weeks of his second term, Trump made decisions at a dizzying pace, creating one controversy after another. Many citizens, even members of the Democratic Party, seemed to be in a state of shock for weeks, but public dissent is now growing.
Recently, public figures like Democratic Senator Cory Booker, former Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama, and Trump's election opponent Kamala Harris have spoken out against Trump. Opposition to the Trump administration has become a galvanizing force, bringing together groups of individuals that share concerns about the direction the country is heading.
- The protests against President Donald Trump, as part of a nationwide day of action, also saw criticism towards employment policies, specifically detailing concerns with the Community policy and employment policies, within Virginia.
- In a rally against the Trump Presidency, protesters in various cities, including Virginia, advocated for the protection of democracy through signs such as "Hands Off Democracy" and "Stop the Coup."
- As Trump's policies weigh heavily on the public, including domestic reforms and immigration policies, several individuals and organizations in Virginia have joined the growing discontentment against the Trump administration.
