In the Middle East, the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip continues to take a heavy toll on both sides.

Israeli Plans for Military Offensive

Israel has announced plans for a fresh military offensive aimed at gaining total control of Gaza City. The Israeli cabinet recently approved this plan, which could lead to the displacement of approximately 800,000 civilians by early October 2025. This move could potentially last several months, involving extensive military operations against Palestinian armed groups[1].

UN and Human Rights Officials' Concerns

UN officials and human rights experts have strongly condemned this plan, warning it risks escalating violence, forced displacement, massive casualties, and regional instability. The UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Türk, called for an immediate halt to the military takeover, emphasizing compliance with international law and the need for a two-State solution guaranteeing Palestinian self-determination[2].

Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis

The situation has resulted in significant casualties and injuries on both sides. Over 1400 Israelis have been killed, and around 4000 have been injured since the attack. Moreover, more than 12,000 people in the Gaza Strip have been injured since the attack. Reports also note killings such as a Palestinian nurse struck during an airdrop on 4 August 2025. Meanwhile, Israel denies famine conditions in Gaza according to an IDF internal study[3]. However, there are urgent calls for unfettered humanitarian aid access to Gaza, with reports highlighting starvation and deaths, including 100 children starving since October 2023[4].

Diplomatic Efforts

Diplomatic efforts include preliminary talks involving Egypt, Qatar, and the US to negotiate a ceasefire and hostage release deal, possibly lasting 60 days, aiming to then move toward a comprehensive peace agreement. However, Israel appears likely to continue or start its military offensive soon after civilian evacuation concludes in early October[3].

Pro-Palestinian Rally in Leipzig

In a show of solidarity, a pro-Palestinian rally took place in Leipzig on Wednesday evening. The rally, organised in Augustusplatz, attracted a mid-three-digit number of people. The event was largely peaceful and uneventful, according to police. Participants in the rally waved Palestinian and Syrian flags[5].

Historical Context

The conflict in the Middle East has been marked by civilian bloodshed on the border since 1948, with the situation in the region showing no signs of abating.
