In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has found himself at the centre of a political storm, with his recent involvement in the U.S. federal government causing widespread concern and protests.

Musk was appointed by former President Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, originally intended as an advisory entity for cutting federal spending and regulations. However, recent developments have raised eyebrows and sparked protests.

On January 24, Musk visited the headquarters of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Washington, D.C., an event that has since been the subject of much speculation. A related article titled "Musk visits OPM following workforce assignments for DOGE" provides some insight, but the identity of the politician who visited Musk on that day remains unclear.

The crux of the controversy lies in an email sent to federal employees offering full pay and benefits through Sept 30 if they resign by Feb 6. This offer, reminiscent of one Musk extended to Twitter employees in 2022, has sparked protests outside the OPM, with slogans such as "robbery in progress" and "get the fork out of my data" being heard.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., has issued a statement condemning "Musk's hostile takeover" of OPM, stating that the actions of Musk and Trump will have disastrous consequences for both federal employees and the American people. Stephanie LaTour, a former government lawyer, travelled from Brooklyn to protest, arguing that President Donald Trump and Musk are attempting to subvert the law to enact their agenda.

LaTour also believes that citizens, including those who are not federal employees, should care about the federal government being taken over by unelected individuals like Elon Musk. This sentiment is echoed in protest signs reading "fork this" and "get the fork out of my data."

Adding fuel to the fire, Musk has been making posts on X, a platform he owns, criticising the U.S. Agency for International Development, which Trump is reportedly planning to merge with the State Department. Moreover, several Musk allies have been installed at the General Services Administration.

A lawsuit filed by unnamed federal employees on Jan 27 alleges that OPM ignored procurement and cybersecurity law to install the system used for the deferred resignation email. A Reuters report states that associates of Elon Musk, in leadership positions at the federal government's human resources agency, have allegedly locked career civil servants out of computer systems containing personal data of millions of federal employees.

In a related article titled "Musk visits and asserts growing influence at GSA," the growing influence of Musk in the federal government is further highlighted. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect the future of the U.S. federal government.
