Injured Star Right Back Gisli Kristjansson Might Miss SC Magdeburg's Champions League Showdown

In a tough blow for SC Magdeburg's Champions League campaign, their star right back Gisli Kristjansson might not make it to the Final Four, taking place this weekend in Cologne. "No training, not sure how or if we can make it work," said SCM coach Bennet Wiegert during a press conference. "For now, it's better to prepare without him."
Kristjansson sustained a shoulder injury in a Bundesliga match against TBV Lemgo towards the beginning of June. He missed the last two games of the season for Magdeburg. However, some positive news regarding his injury was revealed recently. "We've learned we'll attempt a non-surgical approach. We see promising prospects for recovery. But we'll have to observe how things progress," said Wiegert.
Even though his injury might keep him out, Kristjansson will still join the team in Cologne. "Each and every player on our squad should be part of the final squad, regardless of their physical condition," added Wiegert. The German club is gearing up to face reigning champions FC Barcelona in the semi-finals on Saturday. The other matchup will pit German champions Füchse Berlin against French runners-up HBC Nantes.
Kristjansson played through a similar injury in 2023, contributing heavily to the club's triumph in the Champions League. Yet, Wiegert stressed the importance of being cautious with Kristjansson's health and emphasized that his participation would depend on his recovery ahead of the event. Magdeburg and Barcelona will duke it out on Saturday, June 15.
