Democrats will select a new leader on October 18th
The Democrat Party, reflecting on the past decade's setbacks as a valuable lesson, is gearing up for an extraordinary general meeting on October 18. This event, to be held at the Miracle Grand Hotel in Bangkok, will see the election of a new leader and executive committee.
Preparations for this significant moment have been initiated under the leadership of Chalermchai Sri-on, providing a strong foundation for the incoming board. The groundwork for the next general election, including policy frameworks and structures, has already been laid.
Acting party leader Pramuan Pongthawaradej expressed confidence that the meeting will be free of internal divisions. He stated his role as caretaker is to oversee the leadership election and hand over responsibility to the new executive team.
Rumours about the potential return of Abhisit Vejjajiva, a former party leader, have been circulating. Prakob Rattanaphan, a veteran member, addressed these rumours, stating that several members believe Abhisit could be a suitable choice for the party leader. However, no formal confirmation has been made regarding his return.
People in places like Nakhon Si Thammarat are delighted to hear of Abhisit's potential return, with party members identifying suitable candidates for the leadership position, including Korn Chatikavanij and Nualphan Lamsam.
Mr. Pramuan dismissed speculation about internal rifts within the party, stating that there are no cracks, only a determination to see the party progress. He emphasised that everyone wants to see the party move forward and prioritize the interests of the party and the country over personal gain.
Several members of the party, including acting secretary-general Dech-it Khaothong, participated in a meeting to prepare for the extraordinary general meeting. Mr. Dech-it joined the meeting remotely from Songkhla due to prior commitments.
The majority within the party agree that Abhisit Vejjajiva could help revive the party during this period of relative decline. However, the nominations for party leader will be accepted at the meeting, offering a democratic process for all members to voice their opinions.
As the party prepares for this crucial step, it is clear that they are determined to move forward, build on the foundations laid by Chalermchai, and strive for the betterment of the party and the country.
