Democrats will be selecting their new leader on October 18th.

The Democratic Party of Thailand has announced an extraordinary general meeting scheduled for October 18, with the primary objective of electing a new leader and executive committee. The meeting will take place at the Miracle Grand Hotel in Bangkok.

Acting party leader, Pramuan Pongthawaradej, expressed confidence that the meeting will proceed smoothly, with no internal divisions. He stated that everyone involved prioritizes the interests of the party and the country over personal gain. There is no mention of internal rifts according to Mr. Pramuan.

Several members of the party, including acting secretary-general Dech-it Khaothong, will join the meeting remotely. The acting executive committee convened the day before the meeting to prepare.

Nominations for party leader will be accepted at the meeting. Among the potential candidates, the majority within the party agree that Abhisit Vejjajiva can help revive the party during this period of relative decline. Former leader Chalermchai Sri-on left no special instructions, but preparations initiated under his leadership will provide a strong foundation for the incoming board.

Several veteran members, including Chuan Leekpai, have suggested Abhisit Vejjajiva as a suitable choice for the party leader. Prakob Rattanaphan, an acting executive member, mentioned the possibility of Abhisit Vejjajiva's return as a potential candidate. However, no one has formally confirmed his return at this stage.

People in Nakhon Si Thammarat are delighted to hear of Abhisit Vejjajiva's potential return. Party members are identifying suitable candidates, including Korn Chatikavanij and Nualphan Lamsam.

The new executive team, once elected, will set the party's political direction. Groundwork for the next general election has already been laid, including policy frameworks and structures. Mr. Pramuan described the past decade's setbacks as a valuable lesson, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in the party's future endeavours.

Pramuan Pongthawaradej will oversee the leadership election and hand over responsibility to the new executive team, marking a new chapter in the Democratic Party's history. The party looks forward to rejuvenation and growth under its new leadership.
