Democrats seek post-mortem analysis of the 2024 election: A blunt assessment offered

In the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has announced it will conduct an 'autopsy' on its failed campaign. This move comes amidst concerns over foreign electoral interventions and controversies related to campaign practices, although the specific triggering details are not fully known.

According to polls conducted by YouGov, voters' opposition to President Biden running for another term was evident as early as January 2022. A majority of Democrats expressed their disapproval, and the trend continued into the following year. In January 2024, YouGov found that 58 percent of voters were opposed to Biden running again, with 59 percent of independents voicing their disapproval.

Independents were particularly vocal in their opposition, with a 55-point margin against Biden running again in January 2024. This sentiment was further reflected in September 2022, when a YouGov poll found that 59 percent of voters rejected a 2024 Biden run, while only 19 percent were in favour.

Inflation emerged as a significant issue during the 2024 campaign, with 24 percent of the public and 26 percent of independents naming it as the top issue by August 2024. In the same poll, Biden had a minus-25 point net approval on his handling of inflation, with independents net-negative by 41 points.

Keith Naughton, a longtime Republican political consultant and co-founder of Silent Majority Strategies, commented on the Democrats' failure to address the public's concerns. 'The public was telling Democrats what they wanted for more than two years, but they ignored them,' he said.

The DNC's self-examination is expected to avoid discussing the fundamental problems facing Democrats. Instead, it will focus on limiting discussion, avoiding the campaign deficiencies of potential candidates such as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Joe Biden's infirmities.

For Democrats, all policy options to fight inflation were closed off by their hardcore liberal base. Biden's overweening ambition was his most salient characteristic, as he unleashed an avalanche of spending and a tsunami of rules and regulations, which many believe contributed to the surge in inflation.

As the DNC delves into its post-mortem analysis, the party has at most two more elections (2026 and 2028) to run as the 'not Trump' party. If they don't get their act together, the 2029 autopsy might be their last.
