In a series of recent events, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and media conglomerate Walt Disney Company find themselves at the centre of a storm, with political tensions running high.

The latest controversy began when the late-night show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel was suspended by ABC, following comments made by Kimmel regarding the attack on conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The suspension, according to reports, was allegedly due to a threat from the head of the FCC, Brendan Carr.

Carr, who has been characterised by Trump's political supporters as one of them, believes his agency has a strong case for holding Kimmel network parent Walt Disney Co. accountable for spreading misinformation. He called Kimmel's comments "truly sick."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has called for Carr to be fired, labelling him "one of the greatest threats to free speech America has ever seen." Schumer explicitly urged President Trump to fire Carr and condemned the actions as attacks on free speech.

Democrats have unveiled a bill that aims to bolster free speech protections against government officials, in response to these events. However, the bill is unlikely to gain traction in a Republican-controlled Congress.

Meanwhile, the shooting of Charlie Kirk was responded to harshly by Republicans, according to Kimmel's comments. This has led to a heated exchange between Kimmel and the FCC, with the potential for the FCC's involvement in the Disney-NFL Network deal becoming a point of contention.

Walt Disney Co. is seeking approval from the FCC for ESPN's acquisition of the NFL Network. The FCC's stance on misinformation could impact its decisions regarding the approval of the Disney-NFL Network deal.

The Trump administration is accused of trying to capitalise on the shooting of Charlie Kirk, as well as trying to characterize the man charged in the attack on Kirk in a certain way. Congressional Democrats have denounced these actions, harshly criticizing the administration for pressuring ABC toward the suspension of Kimmel's show.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the FCC will handle the Disney-NFL Network deal, and whether free speech protections will be upheld or compromised.
