In a closely contested vote, a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar over her comments regarding the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was defeated in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. The final vote was 214-213, with two Republicans and three Democrats not voting.

The censure resolution, if passed, would have stripped Omar of all committee assignments, including the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on the Budget. However, four House Republicans joined Democrats to prevent the censure and removal of Omar from committee assignments.

The controversy surrounding Omar began when she commented on Kirk's murder, stating that his killing was 'really mortifying' and expressing concern for his family. Omar also mentioned Kirk's previous statements she disagreed with, but did not condone the assassination of Kirk.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Rep. Nancy Mace for her comments about Omar, stating that Mace's rhetoric has made Omar a target. Jeffries described Mace's comments as racist, unhinged, and xenophobic. In response, Omar hit back at Mace, stating that Mace is trying to censure her over comments she never said for political gain.

Meanwhile, Rep. Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida, faced accusations of assault, threats, misrepresentation of military awards, false financial disclosures, and campaign finance violations. Mills' statement to The Hill stated that the assault charge has been dropped by D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department. With the defeat of the censure resolution, efforts to censure Mills will be dropped.

Texas Progressive Rep. Greg Casar has given notice of intent to offer a separate privileged resolution to censure Mills over the accusations against him. A censure of a lawmaker is a formal reprimand of their actions, statements, or a combination of the two.

In a separate development, Rep. Ilhan Omar was previously removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in February 2023 over antisemitic comments. Speaker Mike Johnson has not weighed in on either resolution. The MPD has not responded to requests for confirmation regarding the investigation into Mills.
