Democrats experience mixed emotions, encompassing both trepidation and elation, following victories by leftist candidates in the U.S.
Hell yeah, a socialist may run the Big Apple! Zohran Mamdani managed to snag the top spot in the Democratic primaries and spook the US, leaving both Democratic camps jubilant and fearful.
The "Wall Street Journal" woke up with a start the morning after the primary, as the financial sector grappled with the notion of a socialist calling the shots in New York City. The "New York Times" crooned about a new political star shining in a divided party, while President Trump barked, "Zohran Mamdani, a 100% communist nut, is on his way to becoming mayor."
So, what gives? The Democrats picked their pick for the mayoral election in NYC. For a hot minute, Cuomo looked like the winner, complete with deep pockets, political know-how, and a dark cloud of scandal hanging over him. But at the last stretch, Mamdani swept ahead. Cuomo conceded on election night, acknowledging defeat, though the final count is still pending. Mamdani will run as the Democratic candidate in November.
Politics - A New Star Rising - The Young Socialist Takes the Lead
You might think Mamdani's campaign team consisted of seasoned politicos with years of experience under their belts. Nope! They're more like a small, scrappy team of tireless activists who hit the pavement hard. Mamdani connected with the masses through short, snappy videos on the internet. His promises? Making life in NYC affordable for everyone again - with a four-year rent freeze for two million people, free buses, city-owned supermarkets, and a higher minimum wage. He plans on financing all this (and more) with higher taxes on companies and the wealthy.
Reactions have ranged from wild excitement to full-blown horror - across the political divide. Some within the Democratic camp are uncomfortable, while others are downright thrilled. And with good reason, 'cause Mamdani's success is causing a stir, both in the Democratic camp and among Republicans.
"The Democrats have overstepped," some Republicans gripe. According to Time, Republican Representative Mike Lawler argues, "Democrats will have to endorse Mamdani's positions or reject them." If they endorse Mamdani's views, the voters might not dig them. If they turn on him, the base could revolt. Republican Vice President JD Vance congratulated Mamdani on his success, calling him, "the new leader of the Democratic Party."
The Republican campaign headquarters label Mamdani an "antisemitic socialist radical." During the campaign, Cuomo also threw the antisemitism accusation at Mamdani, claiming he called Israel's war in Gaza a genocide and refused to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state. You might be surprised to learn that Mamdani was still able to win over a disproportionate number of Jewish Democrats, especially younger Jewish women and men. They prioritize economic issues over foreign policy concerns, according to Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic strategist, as cited by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Politics - Trump's Ranting about the "Crazy Communist" Mayor Contender - Has the GOP Gone 'Round the Bend for Mamdani? Trump took to his platform "Truth Social" to comment on Mamdani's victory: "We've had radical leftists before, but this is starting to get a bit ridiculous." All the excitement, all the joy... whether it will matter depends on whether Mamdani actually wins the mayoral election in November.
Trump ally Elise Stefanik is vying to be the next NY governor, and she's already using Mamdani to mount pressure on her Democratic opponents. But she also warns, "This will only matter in the elections if he really becomes mayor."
Politics - The Fear and the Hope - Moderates Fear Trump's Ammo; Progressives See a Beacon**
After Mamdani's victory, moderate Democrats are sounding the alarm. Lawrence Summers, Obama's top economic advisor, expressed his worries about the future of the Democratic Party and the country. Two Democratic representatives from New York's suburbs quickly distanced themselves from Mamdani, calling him "too extreme for New York."
But for progressive left-wing figureheads, Mamdani is a trailblazer, guiding them back to the path of success. Bernie Sanders told Politico magazine that Mamdani's victory shows that it's much more important to focus on the needs of working people than to beg millionaires for donations. He hopes the Democratic Party learns this lesson from Mamdani's campaign.
In the end, all the hopes, all the fears will weigh more depending on whether Mamdani wins the mayoral elections in November or not. It'll be a showdown between the Republicans and the Democrats, the haves and the have-nots, the old guard and the new breed. The future of New York City may hang in the balance.
